COLLECTED INFORMATION
BASIC INFO: ADVERTISEMENTS

- Famous ad man David Ogilvy once said astutely, "I do not regard advertising as entertainment or an art form, but as a medium of information."
- used to present information not only of politics but social consciousness.
- NEGATIVE ADVERTISING- can be put to criticize or put down competition
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Advertising, particularly for fashion and cosmetics, has a powerful effect on how we see ourselves and how we think we should look. Women's magazines in particular have a tremendous influence on body image, with researchers reporting that teenage girls rely heavily on them for information on beauty and fashion, valuing their advice nearly as highly as that of their peers.
- there is a progression towards thinner and thinner models.
- twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 per cent less than the average woman – but today’s models weigh 23 per cent less.
- Everyone is Photoshoped even though they are thinner than what can look true.
- for over a century, advertisements have appealed to women's insecurities in hopes to sell products.
- women are shown images such as shoes and purses and in context of fictional ads. They are more likely to answer negatively to questions like "How attractive do you find yourself?" or "How satisfied are you with your body?" than if they saw the same pictures in a neutral context.
- There is recent news that items that make customers insecure decrease the customer's interest in the product.
THE EFFECTS OF ADVERTISEMENTS:
I wanted to first of all say that I do not think that the media holds the fault that so many teenagers have body images. I only think that they help trigger and influence the illness. This is my opinion and in no means does it mean that I am a trained professional in this topic.
There is a certain image for females. The "Ideal body."
The truth is is that there is no perfect body. There is only the bodies of women who have either starved themselves to achieve it or exercising and eating healthy. The latter will help everyone feel not only feel more confident but even feel healthier and improve their overall health.
The weight of a person does not make the person look how they look. Their body fat makes the person bigger or smaller. If two people with the same weight stood side-by-side but one had 20% fat and the other 35% fat, the difference would be extraordinary. This is why exercise is so important; it can make a person gain muscle definition and lose fat which results in loss of cellulite.
Social comparison, cultivation, and self-schema are reasons for the negative effects of advertisements.
Female Body Image
Body image is a complicated aspect of the self-concept that concerns an individual's perceptions and feelings about their body and physical appearance (Cash & Pruzinsky, 2002).

- Females of all ages are vulnerable to body dissatisfaction.
- Women of all ages AND sizes display body image disturbance.
- If people believe something not true of themselves, then their real body doesn't matter. They could have a fit body but if they aren't content, then their body doesn't matter anymore.
- nearly half of females ages 6-8 have stated that they want to be slimmer.
- Its a major issue as females go through puberty; girls in mid-adolescence frequently report being dissatisfied with weight, fearing further weight gain, and being preoccupied with weight loss
- A person's thoughts can help/destroy them on how they look at many things.
- 2/3 of adolescents report dieting at one point or another.

- GENETICS- they tend to run in families but it does not mean that if someone has it, you will too. The only thing it means is that there is a greater chance of you getting it than someone who doesnt have it genetically run in your family.
- BIOLOGY- some of the illnesses are linked to chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are supposed to help the nerves in the brain communicate with each other. When there is an inbalance or absence, nerves cannot communicate with one another and messages can get lost or changed as they move through the brain. This causes symptoms and injuries/defects have also been connected with some mental illnesses.
- TRAUMA- Psychological trauma like severe emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or severe grief can trigger them. It is especially easy when they happen earlier in life.
- ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS- Combined with the risk for mental illnesses, extreme stress in the individual's environment or lives can bring on the symptoms.

THE BRAIN AND ITS COMPONENTS
Brainwave- an electric impulse in the brain
Approximately 12 million children under the age of 18 have mental disorders. |--- WOW ---|
THE BRAIN
The brain is a complex organ.
It makes up only 2 percent of our body weight, but it consumes 20 percent of the oxygen we breathe and 20 percent of the energy we take in.
How does the brain take in all this information, process it, and cause a response? The basic functional unit of the brain is the neuron.
A neuron is a specialized cell that can produce different actions because of its precise connections with other neurons, sensory receptors, and muscle cells.
